Bible Lesson: Cherished Promises To The Child Of God: To Those Who Keep The Sabbath.

Bible Text:

Isaiah 58:13,14 NLT
13 “Keep the Sabbath day holy. Don’t pursue your own interests on that day,
but enjoy the Sabbath and speak of it with delight as The Lord’s holy day.
Honor the Sabbath in everything you do on that day, and don’t follow your own desires or talk idly.
14 Then The Lord will be your delight. I will give you great honor
and satisfy you with the inheritance I promised to your ancestor Jacob. I, The Lord, have spoken!”

The Lord's Request:

13 “Keep the Sabbath day holy. Don’t pursue your own interests on that day,
but enjoy the Sabbath and speak of it with delight as The Lord’s holy day.
Honor the Sabbath in everything you do on that day, and don’t follow your own desires or talk idly.

The Lord's Promise:

14 Then The Lord will be your delight. I will give you great honor
and satisfy you with the inheritance I promised to your ancestor Jacob. I, The Lord, have spoken!”

The Sabbath;

Genesis 2:2,3 KJV
2 And on the seventh day God ended His work which He had made; and He rested on the seventh day from all His work which He had made.
3 And God blessed the seventh day, and sanctified it: because that in it He had rested from all His work which God created and made.

Exodus 16:23 NLT
He told them, “This is what The Lord commanded: Tomorrow will be a day of complete rest, a holy Sabbath day set apart for The Lord. So bake or boil as much as you want today, and set aside what is left for tomorrow.”

Exodus 20:8-11 KJV
8 Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy.
9 Six days shalt thou labor, and do all thy work:
10 But the seventh day is the sabbath of the Lord thy God: in it thou shalt not do any work, thou, nor thy son, nor thy daughter, thy manservant, nor thy maidservant, nor thy cattle, nor thy stranger that is within thy gates:
11 For in six days the Lord made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them is, and rested the seventh day: wherefore the Lord blessed the sabbath day, and hallowed it.

Exodus 31:16,17 KJV
16 Wherefore the children of Israel shall keep the sabbath, to observe the sabbath throughout their generations, for a perpetual covenant.
17 It is a sign between Me and the children of Israel for ever: for in six days The Lord made heaven and earth, and on the seventh day He rested, and was refreshed.

Exodus 34:21 NLT
You have six days each week for your ordinary work, but on the seventh day you must stop working, even during the seasons of plowing and harvest.

Exodus 35:1-3 NLT
1 Then Moses called together the whole community of Israel and told them, “These are the instructions The Lord has commanded you to follow.
2 You have six days each week for your ordinary work, but the seventh day must be a Sabbath day of complete rest, a holy day dedicated to The Lord. Anyone who works on that day must be put to death.
3 You must not even light a fire in any of your homes on the Sabbath.”

Leviticus 23:3 KJV
Six days shall work be done: but the seventh day is the sabbath of rest, an holy convocation; ye shall do no work therein: it is the sabbath of
The Lord in all your dwellings.

Deuteronomy 5:12-15 KJV
12 Keep the sabbath day to sanctify it, as The Lord thy God hath commanded thee.
13 Six days thou shalt labor, and do all thy work:
14 But the seventh day is the sabbath of The Lord thy God: in it thou shalt not do any work, thou, nor thy son, nor thy daughter, nor thy manservant, nor thy maidservant, nor thine ox, nor thine ass, nor any of thy cattle, nor thy stranger that is within thy gates; that thy manservant and thy maidservant may rest as well as thou.
15 And remember that thou wast a servant in the land of Egypt, and that
The Lord thy God brought thee out thence through a mighty hand and by a stretched out arm: therefore The Lord thy God commanded thee to keep the sabbath day.

Nehemiah 9:14 NLT
You instructed them concerning your holy Sabbath. And you commanded them, through Moses your servant, to obey all your commands, decrees, and instructions.

Nehemiah 13:15-22 NLT
15 In those days I saw men of Judah treading out their wine presses on the Sabbath. They were also bringing in grain, loading it on donkeys, and bringing their wine, grapes, figs, and all sorts of produce to Jerusalem to sell on the Sabbath. So I rebuked them for selling their produce on that day.
16 Some men from Tyre, who lived in Jerusalem, were bringing in fish and all kinds of merchandise. They were selling it on the Sabbath to the people of Judah—and in Jerusalem at that!
17 So I confronted the nobles of Judah. “Why are you profaning the Sabbath in this evil way?” I asked.
18 “Wasn’t it just this sort of thing that your ancestors did that caused our God to bring all this trouble upon us and our city? Now you are bringing even more wrath upon Israel by permitting the Sabbath to be desecrated in this way!”
19 Then I commanded that the gates of Jerusalem should be shut as darkness fell every Friday evening, not to be opened until the Sabbath ended. I sent some of my own servants to guard the gates so that no merchandise could be brought in on the Sabbath day.
20 The merchants and tradesmen with a variety of wares camped outside Jerusalem once or twice.
21 But I spoke sharply to them and said, “What are you doing out here, camping around the wall? If you do this again, I will arrest you!” And that was the last time they came on the Sabbath.
22 Then I commanded the Levites to purify themselves and to guard the gates in order to preserve the holiness of the Sabbath.
Remember this good deed also, O my God! Have compassion on me according to your great and unfailing love.

Isaiah 66:22,23 KJV
22 For as the new heavens and the new earth, which I will make, shall remain before Me, saith The Lord, so shall your seed and your name remain.
23 And it shall come to pass, that from one new moon to another, and from one sabbath to another, shall all flesh come to worship before Me, saith The Lord.

Ezekiel 20:10-24 NLT
10 So I brought them out of Egypt and led them into the wilderness.
11 There I gave them My decrees and regulations so they could find life by keeping them.
12 And I gave them My Sabbath days of rest as a sign between them and Me. It was to remind them that I am The Lord, who had set them apart to be holy.
13 “But the people of Israel rebelled against Me, and they refused to obey My decrees there in the wilderness. They wouldn’t obey My regulations even though obedience would have given them life. They also violated My Sabbath days. So I threatened to pour out My fury on them, and I made plans to utterly consume them in the wilderness.
14 But again I held back in order to protect the honor of My name before the nations who had seen My power in bringing Israel out of Egypt.
15 But I took a solemn oath against them in the wilderness. I swore I would not bring them into the land I had given them, a land flowing with milk and honey, the most beautiful place on earth.
16 For they had rejected My regulations, refused to follow My decrees, and violated My Sabbath days. Their hearts were given to their idols.
17 Nevertheless, I took pity on them and held back from destroying them in the wilderness.
18 “Then I warned their children not to follow in their parents’ footsteps, defiling themselves with their idols.
19 ‘I am The Lord your God,’ I told them. ‘Follow My decrees, pay attention to My regulations,
20 and keep My Sabbath days holy, for they are a sign to remind you that I am The Lord your God.’
21 “But their children, too, rebelled against Me. They refused to keep My decrees and follow My regulations, even though obedience would have given them life. And they also violated My Sabbath days. So again I threatened to pour out My fury on them in the wilderness.
22 Nevertheless, I withdrew My judgment against them to protect the honor of My name before the nations that had seen My power in bringing them out of Egypt.
23 But I took a solemn oath against them in the wilderness. I swore I would scatter them among all the nations
24 because they did not obey My regulations. They scorned My decrees by violating My Sabbath days and longing for the idols of their ancestors.

Matthew 5:17-19 KJV
17 Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfill.
18 For verily I say unto you, Till heaven and earth pass, one jot or one tittle shall in no wise pass from the law, till all be fulfilled.
19 Whosoever therefore shall break one of these least commandments, and shall teach men so, he shall be called the least in the kingdom of heaven: but whosoever shall do and teach them, the same shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven.

Matthew 12:8 KJV
For The Son Of Man is Lord even of the sabbath day.

Matthew 28:1-8 KJV (Christ is risen)
1 In the end of the sabbath, as it began to dawn toward the first day of the week, came Mary Magdalene and the other Mary to see the sepulcher.
2 And, behold, there was a great earthquake: for the angel of The Lord descended from heaven, and came and rolled back the stone from the door, and sat upon it.
3 His countenance was like lightning, and his raiment white as snow:
4 And for fear of him the keepers did shake, and became as dead men.
5 And the angel answered and said unto the women, Fear not ye: for I know that ye seek Jesus, which was crucified.
6 He is not here: for He is risen, as He said. Come, see the place where The Lord lay.
7 And go quickly, and tell His disciples that He is risen from the dead; and, behold, He goeth before you into Galilee; there shall ye see Him: lo, I have told you.
8 And they departed quickly from the sepulcher with fear and great joy; and did run to bring His disciples word.

Mark 2:23-28 NLT
23 One Sabbath day as Jesus was walking through some grain fields, His disciples began breaking off heads of grain to eat.
24 But the Pharisees said to Jesus, “Look, why are they breaking the law by harvesting grain on the Sabbath?”
25 Jesus said to them, “Haven’t you ever read in the Scriptures what David did when he and his companions were hungry?
26 He went into the house of God (during the days when Abiathar was high priest) and broke the law by eating the sacred loaves of bread that only the priests are allowed to eat. He also gave some to his companions.”
27 Then Jesus said to them, “The Sabbath was made to meet the needs of people, and not people to meet the requirements of the Sabbath.
28 So The Son Of Man is Lord, even over the Sabbath!”

Mark 3:1-6 KJV
1 And He entered again into the synagogue; and there was a man there which had a withered hand.
2 And they watched Him, whether He would heal him on the sabbath day; that they might accuse Him.
3 And He saith unto the man which had the withered hand, Stand forth.
4 And He saith unto them, Is it lawful to do good on the sabbath days, or to do evil? to save life, or to kill? But they held their peace.
5 And when He had looked round about on them with anger, being grieved for the hardness of their hearts, He saith unto the man, Stretch forth thine hand. And he stretched it out: and his hand was restored whole as the other.
6 And the Pharisees went forth, and straightway took counsel with the Herodians against Him, how they might destroy Him.

Mark 16:1-10 KJV
1 And when the sabbath was past, Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James, and Salome, had bought sweet spices, that they might come and anoint Him.
2 And very early in the morning the first day of the week, they came unto the sepulcher at the rising of the sun.
3 And they said among themselves, Who shall roll us away the stone from the door of the sepulcher?
4 And when they looked, they saw that the stone was rolled away: for it was very great.
5 And entering into the sepulcher, they saw a young man sitting on the right side, clothed in a long white garment; and they were affrighted.
6 And he saith unto them, Be not affrighted: Ye seek Jesus Of Nazareth, which was crucified: He is risen; He is not here: behold the place where they laid Him.
7 But go your way, tell His disciples and Peter that He goeth before you into Galilee: there shall ye see Him, as He said unto you.
8 And they went out quickly, and fled from the sepulcher; for they trembled and were amazed: neither said they any thing to any man; for they were afraid.
9 Now when Jesus was risen early the first day of the week, He appeared first to Mary Magdalene, out of whom He had cast seven devils.
10 And she went and told them that had been with Him, as they mourned and wept.

Luke 4:16 KJV
And He came to Nazareth, where He had been brought up: and, as His custom was, He went into the synagogue on the sabbath day, and stood up for to read.

Luke 13:10-17 NLT (Jesus Heals on the Sabbath)
10 One Sabbath day as Jesus was teaching in a synagogue,
11 He saw a woman who had been crippled by an evil spirit. She had been bent double for eighteen years and was unable to stand up straight.
12 When Jesus saw her, He called her over and said, “Dear woman, you are healed of your sickness!”
13 Then He touched her, and instantly she could stand straight. How she praised God!
14 But the leader in charge of the synagogue was indignant that Jesus had healed her on the Sabbath day. “There are six days of the week for working,” he said to the crowd. “Come on those days to be healed, not on the Sabbath.”
15 But The Lord replied, “You hypocrites! Each of you works on the Sabbath day! Don’t you untie your ox or your donkey from its stall on the Sabbath and lead it out for water?
16 This dear woman, a daughter of Abraham, has been held in bondage by Satan for eighteen years. Isn’t it right that she be released, even on the Sabbath?”
17 This shamed His enemies, but all the people rejoiced at the wonderful things He did.

Luke 16:17 KJV
And it is easier for heaven and earth to pass, than one tittle of the law to fail.

Luke 23:56 KJV
And they returned, and prepared spices and ointments; and rested the Sabbath day according to the commandment.

Luke 24:1-8 KJV (Christ's resurrection. Read all 53 verses)
1 Now upon the first day of the week, very early in the morning, they came unto the sepulcher, bringing the spices which they had prepared, and certain others with them.
2 And they found the stone rolled away from the sepulcher.
3 And they entered in, and found not the body of The Lord Jesus.
4 And it came to pass, as they were much perplexed thereabout, behold, two men stood by them in shining garments:
5 And as they were afraid, and bowed down their faces to the earth, they said unto them, Why seek ye the living among the dead?
6 He is not here, but is risen: remember how He spake unto you when He was yet in Galilee,
7 Saying, The Son Of Man must be delivered into the hands of sinful men, and be crucified, and the third day rise again.
8 And they remembered His words,

John 14:15,21 KJV
15 If ye love Me, keep My commandments.
21 He that hath My commandments, and keepeth them, he it is that loveth Me: and he that loveth Me shall be loved of My Father, and I will love him, and will manifest Myself to him.

John 20:1,19 KJV (Christ's resurrection)
1 The first day of the week cometh Mary Magdalene early, when it was yet dark, unto the sepulcher, and seeth the stone taken away from the sepulcher.
19 Then the same day at evening, being the first day of the week, when the doors were shut where the disciples were assembled for fear of the Jews, came Jesus and stood in the midst, and saith unto them, Peace be unto you.

Acts 13:14,42 KJV
14 But when they departed from Perga, they came to Antioch in Pisidia, and went into the synagogue on the sabbath day, and sat down.
42 And when the Jews were gone out of the synagogue, the Gentiles besought that these words might be preached to them the next sabbath.

I Corinthians 16:1,2 KJV

1 Now concerning the collection for the saints, as I have given order to the churches of Galatia, even so do ye.
2 Upon the first day of the week let every one of you lay by him in store, as God hath prospered him, that there be no gatherings when I come.

Galatians 4:8-12 NLT (Paul’s Concern for the Galatians)
8 Before you Gentiles knew God, you were slaves to so-called gods that do not even exist.
9 So now that you know God (or should I say, now that God knows you), why do you want to go back again and become slaves once more to the weak and useless spiritual principles of this world?
10 You are trying to earn favor with God by observing certain days or months or seasons or years.
11 I fear for you. Perhaps all my hard work with you was for nothing.
12 Dear brothers and sisters, I plead with you to live as I do in freedom from these things, for I have become like you Gentiles—free from those laws.

Colossians 2:16,17 NLT
16 So don’t let anyone condemn you for what you eat or drink, or for not celebrating certain holy days or new moon ceremonies or Sabbaths.
17 For these rules are only shadows of the reality yet to come. And Christ Himself is that reality.

Hebrews 4:9-11 NLT
9 So there is a special rest still waiting for the people of God.
10 For all who have entered into God’s rest have rested from their labors, just as God did after creating the world.
11 So let us do our best to enter that rest. But if we disobey God, as the people of Israel did, we will fall.

Revelation 14:12 NLT
This means that God’s holy people must endure persecution patiently, obeying His commands and maintaining their faith in Jesus.

A last thought, regarding the Sabbath.

Romans 5:1 KJV
Therefore being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ:

Colossians 2:16,17 KJV
16 Let no man therefore judge you in meat, or in drink, or in respect of an holy day, or of the new moon, or of the sabbath days:
17 Which are a shadow of things to come; but the body is of Christ.

Romans 6:14,15 KJV
14 For sin shall not have dominion over you: for ye are not under the law, but under grace.
15 What then? shall we sin, because we are not under the law, but under grace? God forbid.

Not under the law, does not mean, not under our Lord's example!

John 13:15 KJV
For I have given you an example, that ye should do as I have done to you.

Luke 4:16 KJV  (Jesus)
And He came to Nazareth, where He had been brought up: and, as His custom was, He went into the synagogue on the sabbath day, and stood up for to read

Hebrews 10:24,25 KJV (Apostle Paul)
24 And let us consider one another to provoke unto love and to good works:
25 Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as the manner of some is; but exhorting one another: and so much the more, as ye see the day approaching.

Matthew 11:28 KJV
Come unto Me, all ye that labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.
