Bible Questions Answered:

“My girl friend's church has communion, but it's different than at my church. At their church only their Priest has the bread and it is called the body of Christ. We don't do things like that at our church. Do churches differ that much on communion?...”:

Kelly/ Houston, Texas

Bible Answer:

Answer, yes!

Depending on the church, The Lord's Supper is a matter of “transubstantiation, or consubstantiation,” etc. etc.

Terms:

Transubstantiation

In the Catholic church it is believed that the elements of communion are actually changed into the actual body and blood of The Lord Jesus Christ, according to the Priests prayer.

Consubstantiation:

A Luthren view of communion, Jesus is present in and with the elements of communion. Although the elements remain unchangedd, yet Christ is in and with them. Not the actual body and blood of Christ yet a grace yielding presence of The Lord to all who receive.

Reformed View:

Not actual body and blood, but yet a real presence of Christ in the bread and wine. Christ's grace giving presence given to all adherents.

Still others hold to what is known as the...

Memorial View:

No change in the elements.  Communion articals thought of as symbols (a remembrance) of what took place in the life of The Lord (i.e. death and resurrection.) The means of our salvation, not the taking of communion, but The Lord Jesus giving of His life's Blood for our redemption!

I Corinthians 11:24,25 KJV

24 And when He had given thanks, He brake it, and said, Take, eat: this is My body, which is broken for you: this do in remembrance of Me.

25 After the same manner also He took the cup, when He had supped, saying, this cup is The New Testament in My blood: this do ye, as oft as ye drink it,

in remembrance of Me.

This keeps us mindful of the coming of The Lord.

I Corinthians 11:26 KJV

For as often as ye eat this bread, and drink this cup, ye do shew

The Lord's death till He come.

This keeps us mindful of the unity of believers through The Blood Of Christ.

I Corinthians 10:17 KJV

For we being many are one bread, and one body: for we are all partakers of that one bread.

Prayer:

Exodus 12:21-25 NLT

21 Then Moses called all the elders of Israel together and said to them, “Go, pick out a lamb or young goat for each of your families, and slaughter the Passover animal.

22 Drain the blood into a basin. Then take a bundle of hyssop branches and dip it into the blood. Brush the hyssop across the top and sides of the doorframes of your houses. And no one may go out through the door until morning.

23 For The Lord will pass through the land to strike down the Egyptians. But when He sees the blood on the top and sides of the doorframe, The Lord will pass over your home. He will not permit His death angel to enter your house and strike you down.

24 “Remember, these instructions are a permanent law that you and your descendants must observe forever.

25 When you enter the land The Lord has promised to give you, you will continue to observe this ceremony.

Our Lord, introduced the taking of Communion at what was the remembrance  of “The Passover.”

A time of the people of God's escape from the Egyptians.

For  us as Christians when we look upon communion, it does not “save us,” that was done by our Savior, it is because of  His precious Blood, that death, hell  and judgement is passed over us!

Death and judgement are “passed over” us, because of our Lord's sacrifice for us.

Matthew 26:26-28 NLT

26 As they were eating, Jesus took some bread and blessed it. Then He broke it in pieces and gave it to the  disciples, saying, “Take this and eat it, for this is My Body.”

27 And He took a cup of wine and gave thanks to God for it. He gave it to them and said, “Each of you drink from it,

28 for this is My Blood, which confirms the covenant between God and His people. It is poured out as a sacrifice to forgive the sins of many.

The question today is, is the precious Blood of Jesus Christ upon the door posts of your heart?

Acts 2:21 KJV

And it shall come to pass, that whosoever shall call on the name of

The Lord shall be saved.
