Bible Lesson: Miracles Of The Old Testament: Sun And Moon Stand Still
Bible Lesson: Miracles Of The Old
Testament: Sun And Moon Stand Still.
Occasion: The Day Lengthened For
The Israelites.
Location: Gibeon.
Bible Text:
Joshua 10:1-15 NLT (Be sure to read
the whole chapter to verse 43.)
(Southern
Armies Defeated By Israel.)
1 Adoni-zedek,
king of Jerusalem, heard that Joshua had captured and completely
destroyed Ai and killed its king, just as he had destroyed the town
of Jericho and killed its king. He also learned that the Gibeonites
had made peace with Israel and were now their allies.
2 He and his
people became very afraid when they heard all this because Gibeon was
a large town—as large as the royal cities and larger than Ai. And
the Gibeonite men were strong warriors.
3 So King
Adoni-zedek of Jerusalem sent messengers to several other
kings: Hoham of Hebron, Piram of Jarmuth,
Japhia of Lachish, and Debir of Eglon.
4 “Come and
help me destroy Gibeon,” he urged them, “for they have made peace
with Joshua and the people of Israel.”
5 So these five
Amorite kings combined their armies for a united attack. They
moved all their troops into place and attacked Gibeon.
6 The men of
Gibeon quickly sent messengers to Joshua at his camp in Gilgal.
“Don’t abandon your servants now!” they pleaded. “Come at
once! Save us! Help us! For all the Amorite kings who live in the
hill country have joined forces to attack us.”
7 So Joshua and
his entire army, including his best warriors, left Gilgal and set out
for Gibeon.
8 “Do
not be afraid of them,” the Lord said to Joshua, “for I have
given you victory over them. Not a single one of them will be able to
stand up to you.”
9 Joshua
traveled all night from Gilgal and took the Amorite armies by
surprise.
10 The Lord
threw them into a panic, and the Israelites slaughtered great numbers
of them at Gibeon. Then the Israelites chased the enemy along the
road to Beth-horon, killing them all along the way to Azekah and
Makkedah.
11 As the
Amorites retreated down the road from Beth-horon, The Lord destroyed
them with a terrible hailstorm from heaven that continued until they
reached Azekah. The hail killed more of the enemy than the Israelites
killed with the sword.
12 On the day
the Lord gave the Israelites victory over the Amorites, Joshua
prayed to the Lord in front of all the people of Israel. He said,
“Let the sun stand still over
Gibeon,
and the moon over the valley
of Aijalon.”
13 So the
sun stood still and the moon stayed in place until the nation of
Israel had defeated its enemies.
Is this event
not recorded in The Book of Jashar?
The sun stayed in the middle of the sky, and it did not set as on
a normal day.
14 There has never been a day like this one before or since, when
the Lord answered such a prayer. Surely the Lord fought for Israel
that day!
15 Then Joshua and the Israelite army returned to their camp at
Gilgal.
Joshua 10:1-5 NLT
1 Adoni-zedek, king of Jerusalem,
heard that Joshua had captured and completely destroyed Ai and killed
its king, just as he had destroyed the town of Jericho and killed its
king. He also learned that the Gibeonites had made peace with Israel
and were now their allies.
2 He and his people became very
afraid when they heard all this because Gibeon was a large town—as
large as the royal cities and larger than Ai. And the Gibeonite men
were strong warriors.
3 So King Adoni-zedek of
Jerusalem sent messengers to several other kings: Hoham of Hebron,
Piram of Jarmuth, Japhia of Lachish, and Debir of Eglon.
4 “Come and help me destroy
Gibeon,” he urged them, “for they have made peace with Joshua and
the people of Israel.”
5 So these
five Amorite kings combined their armies for a united attack.
They moved all their troops into place and attacked Gibeon.
King Adoni-zedek, of Jerusalem,
had heard that Joshua and the Israelites had taken Ai and made
friends with the Gibeonites, and he became worried, for his own
safety. He quickly thought to himself, if I gain for other strong
kings, we will wipe out the Gideonites, and thus showing our great
strength!
Question: Is there “strength
in numbers,” as far as the enemies of God are concerned?
Answer: How ridiculous! God
is “all-powerful,” in heaven and on earth!
Our Lord, on the night of His
betrayal said to His disciples.
Matthew 26:53 KJV
Thinkest thou that I cannot now
pray to My Father, and He shall presently give Me more than twelve
legions of angels? (A
Roman legion was approximately 6,000 soldiers, and so our Lord, could
have called 72,000 angels, from heaven.)
I Chronicles 29:11,12 KJV
11
Thine, O Lord is the greatness, and the power, and the glory, and the
victory, and the majesty: for all that is in the heaven and in the
earth is thine; thine is the kingdom, O Lord, and thou art exalted as
head above all.
12
Both riches and honor come of thee, and thou reignest over all; and
in thine hand is power and might; and in thine hand it is to make
great, and to give strength unto all.
II Chronicles 25:8 KJV
"...God
hath power to help, and to cast down."
Psalm 62:11 KJV
God
hath spoken once; twice have I heard this; that power belongeth unto
God.

And
Jesus came and spake unto them, saying, All power is given unto Me in
heaven and in earth.
Joshua 10:6 NLT
6 The men
of Gibeon quickly sent messengers to Joshua at his camp in Gilgal.
“Don’t abandon your servants now!” they pleaded. “Come at
once! Save us! Help us! For all the Amorite kings who live in the
hill country have joined forces to attack us.”
The leader of Giberon knew one thing, it was time to call on Joshua
for help!
And when the enemy comes against us, may we also realize, it is time
to call upon the Lord, and His people!
I Peter 5:6-9 KJV
6 Humble yourselves therefore under the mighty hand of God, that
He may exalt you in due time:
7 Casting all your care upon Him; for He careth for you.
8 Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a
roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour:
9 Whom resist stedfast in the faith...”
Exodus 14:14 KJV
The Lord shall fight for you, and ye shall hold your peace.

them: for The Lord thy God is with thee..."
4 For the Lord your God is He that goeth with you, to fight for
you against your enemies, to save you.
II Chronicles 32:7,8 KJV
7 Be strong and courageous, be not afraid nor dismayed for the
king of Assyria (The enemy), nor for all the multitude that is with
him: for there be more with us than with him:
8 With him is an arm of flesh; but with us is The Lord our God to
help us, and to fight our battles..."
Psalm 5:11,12 KJV
11 But let all those that put their trust in thee rejoice: let
them ever shout for joy, because thou defendest them: let them also
that love thy name be joyful in thee.
12 For thou, Lord, wilt bless the righteous; with favor wilt thou
compass him as with a shield.
Psalm 18:1-3 KJV
I will love thee, O Lord, my strength.
2 The Lord is my Rock, and my fortress, and my deliverer; my God,
my strength, in whom I will trust; my buckler, and the horn of my
salvation, and my high tower.
3 I will call upon the Lord, who is worthy to be praised: so shall
I be saved from mine enemies.
Joshua 10:7,8 NLT
7 So Joshua and his entire army,
including his best warriors, left Gilgal and set out for Gibeon.
8 “Do
not be afraid of them,” the Lord said to Joshua, “for I have
given you victory over them. Not a single one of them will be able to
stand up to you.”
And our Lord tells us today, not to fear the enemy!
Psalm 3:6-8 KJV
6 I will not be afraid of ten thousands of people, that have set
themselves against me round about.
7 Arise, O Lord; save me, O my God: for thou hast smitten all mine
enemies upon the cheek bone; thou hast broken the teeth of the
ungodly.
8 Salvation belongeth unto The Lord: thy blessing is upon thy
people. Selah.
Psalm 27:1-6 KJV
1 The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? the
Lord is the strength of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?
2 When the wicked, even mine enemies and my foes, came upon me to
eat up my flesh, they stumbled and fell.
3 Though an host should encamp against me, my heart shall not
fear: though war should rise against me, in this will I be confident.
4 One thing have I desired of The Lord, that will I seek after;
that I may dwell in the house of The Lord all the days of my
life, to behold the beauty of The Lord, and to enquire in His temple.
5 For in the time of trouble He shall hide me in His pavilion: in
the secret of His tabernacle shall He hide me; He shall set me up
upon a Rock.
6 And now shall mine head be lifted up above mine enemies round
about me: therefore will I offer in His tabernacle sacrifices of joy;
I will sing, yea, I will sing praises unto The Lord.

from the noisome pestilence.
4 He shall cover thee with His feathers, and under His wings shalt
thou trust: His truth shall be thy shield and buckler. (See the blog: Mother-Love )
5 Thou shalt not be afraid for the terror by night; nor for the
arrow that flieth by day;
6 Nor for the pestilence that walketh in darkness; nor for the
destruction that wasteth at noonday.
7 A thousand shall fall at thy side, and ten thousand at thy right
hand; but it shall not come nigh thee.
8 Only with thine eyes shalt thou behold and see the reward of the
wicked.
9 Because thou hast made The Lord, which is my refuge, even The
Most High, thy habitation;
10 There shall no evil befall thee, neither shall any plague come
nigh thy dwelling.
11 For He shall give His angels charge over thee, to keep thee in
all thy ways.
12 They shall bear thee up in their hands, lest thou dash thy foot
against a stone.
13 Thou shalt tread upon the lion and adder: the young lion and
the dragon shalt thou trample under feet.
14 Because He hath set His love upon me, therefore will I deliver
him: I will set him on high, because he hath known My name.
15 He shall call upon Me, and I will answer him: I will be with
him in trouble; I will deliver him, and honor him.
16 With long life will I satisfy him, and shew him My salvation.

11 Behold, all they that were incensed against thee shall be
ashamed and confounded: they shall be as nothing; and they that
strive with thee shall perish.
12 Thou shalt seek them, and shalt not find them, even them that
contended with thee: they that war against thee shall be as nothing,
and as a thing of nought.
13 For I The Lord thy God will hold thy right hand, saying unto
thee, Fear not; I will help thee.
Isaiah 43:1-3 KJV

Astronomers call this missing time in astronomy, “Joshua's Long

other explanation!
