Bible Questions Answered: Dove Resting Upon Christ

Bible Questions Answered:
Why did bird as a dove, come upon Jesus?
Rosa/ Pelotas, Brazil, South America

Bible Answer:

Text: Matthew 3:13-17 KJV
13 Then cometh Jesus from Galilee to Jordan unto John, to be baptized of him.
14 But John forbade him, saying, I have need to be baptized of thee, and comest thou to me?
15 And Jesus answering said unto him, Suffer it to be so now: for thus it becometh us to fulfil all righteousness. Then he suffered Him.
16 And Jesus, when He was baptized, went up straightway out of the water: and, lo, the heavens were opened unto Him, and He saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove, and lighting upon Him:
17 And lo a voice from heaven, saying, This is My Beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.

First of all, let it be perfectly understood, that the Holy Spirit, has never been foreign to the Lord Jesus.
He was every bit God, for eternity past (one) with God, the Father and God, the Holy Spirit!

Isaiah 9:6 KJV
For unto us a Child is born, unto us a Son is given: and the government shall be upon His shoulder: and His name shall be called Wonderful, Counselor, The Mighty God,
The Everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.

Secondly, Why the Dove, descending upon the baptized, Lord Jesus?
Although John the Baptist had no doubt heard of Jesus through his mother, he had never met Him, and the Dove sign, showed to John, just who Jesus was!

John 1:29-34 NLT
29 The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him and said, “Look! The Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world!
30 He is the one I was talking about when I said, ‘A man is coming after me who is far greater than I am, for He existed long before me.’
31 I did not recognize Him as the Messiah, but I have been baptizing with water so that He might be revealed to Israel.”
32 Then John testified, “I saw the Holy Spirit descending like a dove from heaven and resting upon Him.
33 I didn’t know He was the one, but when God sent me to baptize with water, He told me, ‘The one on whom you see the Spirit descend and rest is the one who will baptize with the Holy Spirit.’
34 I saw this happen to Jesus, so I testify that He is the Chosen One of God.”

Thirdly, may it also be known, that Christ was not baptized as to a confession of personal sin.
Christ was baptized, as the one who was absolutely sinless, and who would yet take on the sins of the whole world.

II Corinthians 5:21 KJV
For He hath made Him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in Him.

I Peter 2:21-25 KJV
21 For even hereunto were ye called: because Christ also suffered for us, leaving us an example, that ye should follow His steps:
22 Who did no sin, neither was guile found in His mouth:
23 Who, when He was reviled, reviled not again; when He suffered, He threatened not; but committed Himself to Him that judgeth righteously:
24 Who His own self bare our sins in His own body on the tree, that we, being dead to sins, should live unto righteousness: by whose stripes ye were healed.
25 For ye were as sheep going astray; but are now returned unto the Shepherd and Bishop of your souls.

I Peter 3:18 KJV
For Christ also hath once suffered for sins, the Just for the unjust, that He might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh, but quickened by the Spirit:

Fourthly, the voice of the Father from heaven, signified of His pleasure in His Son!

Psalm 2:7 KJV
I will declare the decree: the Lord hath said unto Me, Thou art My Son; this day have I begotten thee.

Isaiah 42:1 KJV
Behold My servant, whom I uphold; Mine Elect, in whom My soul delighteth; I have put My Spirit upon Him: He shall bring forth judgment to the Gentiles.

Fifthly, it shows for one and “all,” that the “us,” in Genesis the Hebrew word “Elohiym (El-o-heem) is plural, speaking of the Eternal Trinity.

Genesis 1:26,27 KJV
26 And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth.
27 So God created man in His own image, in the image of God created He him; male and female created He them.

Matthew 28:18-20 KJV
18 And Jesus came and spake unto them, saying, All power is given unto Me in heaven and in earth.
19 Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost:
20 Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you always, even unto the end of the world. Amen.

John 14:16,26 KJV
16 And I (Jesus) will pray the Father, and He shall give you another Comforter(The Parakletos,Holy Spirit) that He may abide with you for ever;
26 But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in My name (Jesus), He shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you.

John 15:26 KJV
But when the Comforter is come, whom I(Jesus)will send unto you from the Father, even the Spirit of Truth, which proceedeth from the Father, He shall testify of Me:

II Corinthians 13:14 KJV
The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God (The Father), and the communion of the Holy Ghost, be with you all. Amen.

I Peter 1:2 KJV
Elect according to the foreknowledge of God the Father, through sanctification of
the Spirit, unto obedience and sprinkling of the blood of Jesus Christ: Grace unto you, and peace, be multiplied.

I John 5:7 KJV
For there are three that bear record in heaven, the Father, the Word (Jesus), and
the Holy Ghost: and these three are one.

Sixth and lastly, why the dove?
The dove was a emblem of the nature of Christ.
(Here a just a few.)

Gentleness:

James 3:17 KJV
But the wisdom that is from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, and easy to be intreated, full of mercy and good fruits, without partiality, and without hypocrisy.

Meekness:

Isaiah 53:7 KJV
He was oppressed, and He was afflicted, yet He opened not his mouth: He is brought as a Lamb to the slaughter, and as a Sheep before her shearers is dumb, so He openeth not His mouth.

Matthew 11:29 KJV
Take My yoke upon you, and learn of Me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls.

Peace:

John 14:27 KJV
Peace I leave with you, My peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you.
Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.

Purity:

Psalm 24:3,4 KJV
3 Who shall ascend into the hill of the Lord? or who shall stand in His holy place?
4 He that hath clean hands, and a pure heart; who hath not lifted up his soul unto vanity, nor sworn deceitfully.

I Peter 2:22 KJV
Who did no sin, neither was guile found in His mouth:

Beauty:

Psalm 149:4 KJV
For the Lord taketh pleasure in His people: He will beautify the meek with salvation.

II Corinthians 3:18 KJV
But we all, with open face beholding as in a glass the glory of the Lord, are changed into the same image from glory to glory, even as by the Spirit of the Lord.

Philippians 3:21 KJV
Who shall change our vile body, that it may be fashioned like unto His glorious body, according to the working whereby He is able even to subdue all things unto Himself.
