Symbols Of Biblical Characters: James The Less
Symbols Of Biblical Characters: James the Less.
Church Symbol: Club (bat), a vertical saw with it's handle upward.
James the Less: (Perhaps younger than Christ's other disciple named James, the son of Zebedee, or less in stature, Mark 15:40 "...James the less...").
Less is known of James the son of Alphaeus, and thus his name.
James was one of the twelve disciples (Matthew 10:3/ Mark 3:18/ Luke 6:15/ Acts 1:13).
James was present in the Upper Room at Jerusalem.
Both Matthew and James are said to have been sons of Alphaeus, and so, brothers,
Matthew 10:3
Philip, and Bartholomew; Thomas, and Matthew the publican; James the son of Alphaeus, and Lebbaeus, whose surname was Thaddaeus;
Mark 2:14
And as he passed by, he saw Levi (Matthew) the son of Alphaeus sitting at the receipt of custom, and said unto him, Follow me. And he arose and followed him.
Tradition states that James was thrown from the temple, by the pharisees and Scribes, then stoned and beaten to death with a fuller's club. (Smith's Bible Dictionary)
