Bible Questions Answered: Tempted-By God?

Bible Questions Answered:
I read in Genesis that God tempted Abraham. Isn't it a sin to tempt someone?
Daryl/ Huntsville, Alabama

Bible Answer:
The scripture to which you refer is...

Genesis 22:1 KJV
And it came to pass after these things, that God did tempt Abraham, and said unto him, Abraham: and he said, Behold, here I am.

The Hebrew word here for "tempt," is Nacah (naw-saw).
It means: To test, To prove, To try.

Abraham had just come from a victory in peace relations, with the Philistine, Abimelech.

God had just told Abraham, by dream or vision.....

Gen. 22:2 KJV
And He said, Take now thy son, thine only son Isaac, whom thou lovest, and get thee into the land of Moriah; and offer him there for a burnt offering upon one of the mountains which I will tell thee of.

Abraham's faith was to be tested, would he be so faithful to God, as to be willing to offer up in sacrifice, his son, his "only son?"

Genesis chapter twenty two tells us that Abraham, was faithful, he was willing to obey God in any and all things he was called to do.

In the last moment, God, gave a ram, caught in a bush to Abraham, to offer up instead of his dear son.
It was a symbol, a spiritual prefiguring of what God, would have to do one day, regarding His own dear and precious Son, the Lord Jesus.

Other Bible versions do not use the word "Tempt."

Genesis 22:1 NLT
Some time later, God tested Abraham’s faith. “Abraham!” God called.
“Yes,” he replied. “Here I am.”

Genesis 22:1 NET
Some time after these things God tested Abraham. He said to him, “Abraham!” “Here I am!” Abraham replied.

Genesis 22:1 NASB
Now it came about after these things, that God tested Abraham, and said to him, "Abraham !" And he said, "Here I am."

Genesis 22:1 RSV
After these things God tested Abraham, and said to him, "Abraham!" And he said, "Here am I."

Genesis 22:1 AMP
AFTER THESE events, God tested and proved Abraham and said to him, Abraham! And he said, Here I am.

God does not tempt, individuals to sin!

James 1:13 KJV
Let no man say when he is tempted, I am tempted of God: for God cannot be tempted with evil, neither tempteth He any man:

James 1:12,13 NASB
12. Blessed is a man who perseveres under trial ; for once he has been approved, he will receive the crown of life which the Lord has promised to those who love Him.
13. Let no one say when he is tempted, "I am being tempted by God "; for God cannot be tempted by evil, and He Himself does not tempt anyone.
14. But each one is tempted when he is carried away and enticed by his own lust.

Our God does not tempt anyone, but for all who call upon Him, He does deliver them, from temptations.

I Corinthians 10:13 NLT
The temptations in your life are no different from what others experience. And God is faithful. He will not allow the temptation to be more than you can stand. When you are tempted, He will show you a way out so that you can endure.

Hebrews 2:18 NLT
Since He Himself has gone through suffering and testing, He is able to help us when we are being tested.

II Peter 2:9 NLT
So you see, the Lord knows how to rescue Godly people from their trials, even while keeping the wicked under punishment until the day of final judgment.

Revelation 3:10 KJV
Because thou hast kept the word of My patience, I also will keep thee from the hour of temptation, which shall come upon all the world, to try them that dwell upon the earth.

God does not tempt man to sin, but, He does test men, to see their faith, as was the case with Abraham!

Zechariah 13:9 KJV
And I will bring the third part through the fire, and will refine them as silver is refined, and will try them as gold is tried: they shall call on My name, and I will hear them: I will say, It is My people: and they shall say, The LORD is my God.

Malachi 3:3 KJV
And He shall sit as a refiner and purifer of silver: and He shall purify the sons of Levi, and purge them as gold and silver, that they may offer unto the LORD an offering in righteousness.

Luke 6:46-49 KJV
[46] And why call ye Me, Lord, Lord, and do not the things which I say?
[47] Whosoever cometh to Me, and heareth My sayings, and doeth them, I will shew you to whom he is like:
[48] He is like a man which built an house, and digged deep, and laid the foundation on a rock: and when the flood arose, the stream beat vehemently upon that house, and could not shake it: for it was founded upon a rock.
[49] But he that heareth, and doeth not, is like a man that without a foundation built an house upon the earth; against which the stream did beat vehemently, and immediately it fell; and the ruin of that house was great.

I Corinthians 3:13 KJV
Every man's work shall be made manifest: for the day shall declare it, because it shall be revealed by fire; and the fire shall try every man's work of what sort it is.
