Lesson: Marks Of Godly Character Versus Marks Of Non-Christian
Character: Chastity Versus Lust.
Bible
Texts:
Chastity:
Titus
2:5 NLT
To
live wisely and be pure, to work in their homes, to do good, and to
be submissive to their husbands. Then they will not bring shame on
The Word Of God.
Lust:
James
1:14,15 NLT
14
Temptation comes from our own desires, which entice us and drag us
away.
15
These desires give birth to sinful actions. And when sin is allowed
to grow, it gives birth to death.
The
Word, Chastity:
Chaste:
Refraining from sexual intercourse that is regarded as
contrary to morality or religion; virtuous.
Virgin.
Not engaging in sexual relations; celibate.
Free from obscenity; decent: chaste conversation.
Undefiled or stainless: chaste, white snow.
Pure in style; not excessively ornamented; simple.
Psalm
51:10 KJV
Create
in me a clean heart, O God; and renew a right spirit within me.
Psalm
119:9 NLT
How
can a young person stay pure? By obeying your Word.
Proverbs
2:10,11 KJV
10
When wisdom entereth into thine heart, and knowledge is pleasant unto
thy soul;
11
Discretion shall preserve thee, understanding shall keep thee:
Romans
12:1 KJV
I
beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye
present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God,
which is your reasonable service.
Romans
13:13,14 NLT
13
Because we belong to the day, we must live decent lives for all to
see. Don’t participate in the darkness of wild parties and
drunkenness, or in sexual promiscuity and immoral living, or in
quarreling and jealousy.
14
Instead, clothe yourself with the presence of The Lord Jesus Christ.
And don’t let yourself think about ways to indulge your evil
desires.
I
Corinthians 5:9-13 NLT
9
When I wrote to you before, I told you not to associate with people
who indulge in sexual sin.
10
But I wasn’t talking about unbelievers who indulge in sexual sin,
or are greedy, or cheat people, or worship idols. You would have to
leave this world to avoid people like that. 11 I meant that you are
not to associate with anyone who claims to be a believer yet indulges
in sexual sin, or is greedy, or worships idols, or is abusive, or is
a drunkard, or cheats people. Don’t even eat with such people.
12
It isn’t my responsibility to judge outsiders, but it certainly is
your responsibility to judge those inside the church who are sinning.
13
God will judge those on the outside; but as the Scriptures say, “You
must remove the evil person from among you.”
I
Corinthians 6:18-20 KJV
18
Flee fornication. Every sin that a man doeth is without the body; but
he that committeth fornication sinneth against his own body.
19
What? know ye not that your body is the temple of The Holy Ghost
which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own?
20
For ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body,
and in your spirit, which are God's.
II
Corinthians 5:17 KJV
Therefore
if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed
away; behold, all things are become new.
Ephesians
5:3-5 KJV
3
But fornication, and all uncleanness, or covetousness, let it not be
once named among you, as becometh saints;
4
Neither filthiness, nor foolish talking, nor jesting, which are not
convenient: but rather giving of thanks.
5
For this ye know, that no whoremonger, nor unclean person, nor
covetous man, who is an idolater, hath any inheritance in the kingdom
of Christ and of God.
Colossians
3:5 NLT
So
put to death the sinful, earthly things lurking within you. Have
nothing to do with sexual immorality, impurity, lust, and evil
desires. Don’t be greedy, for a greedy person is an idolater,
worshiping the things of this world.
I
Thessalonians 4:3-5,7,8 NLT
3
God’s will is for you to be holy, so stay away from all sexual sin.
4
Then each of you will control his own body and live in holiness and
honor—
5
not in lustful passion like the pagans who do not know God and His
ways.
7
God has called us to live holy lives, not impure lives.
8
Therefore, anyone who refuses to live by these rules is not
disobeying human teaching but is rejecting God, who gives His Holy
Spirit to you.
II
Timothy 2:22 KJV
Flee
also youthful lusts: but follow righteousness, faith, charity, peace,
with them that call on The Lord out of a pure heart.
The
Word, Lust:
Lust
Intense sexual desire or appetite.
Uncontrolled or illicit sexual desire or appetite;
Lecherousness.
A passionate or overmastering desire or craving (usually
followed by for): a lust for power.
Ardent enthusiasm; zest; relish:
Exodus
20:14 KJV
Thou
shalt not commit adultery.
Job
31:1 NLT
“I
made a covenant with my eyes not to look with lust at a young woman.
Proverbs
22:14 KJV
The
mouth of strange women is a deep pit: he that is abhorred of The Lord
shall fall therein.
Proverbs
23:31-33 KJV
31
Look not thou upon the wine when it is red, when it giveth his color
in the cup, when it moveth itself aright.
32
At the last it biteth like a serpent, and stingeth like an adder.
33
Thine eyes shall behold strange women, and thine heart shall utter
perverse things.
Matthew
5:27,28 KJV
27
Ye have heard that it was said by them of old time, Thou shalt not
commit adultery:
28
But I say unto you, That whosoever looketh on a woman to lust after
her hath committed adultery with her already in his heart.
Matthew
15:19,20 KJV
19
For out of the heart proceed evil thoughts, murders, adulteries,
fornications, thefts, false witness, blasphemies:
20
These are the things which defile a man..."
Acts
15:19-21 NLT
19
“And so my judgment is that we should not make it difficult for the
Gentiles who are turning to God.
20
Instead, we should write and tell them to abstain from eating food
offered to idols, from sexual immorality, from eating the meat of
strangled animals, and from consuming blood.
21
For these laws of Moses have been preached in Jewish synagogues in
every city on every Sabbath for many generations.”
Romans 1:18-32 NLT (God’s Anger at Sin)
18
But God shows His anger from heaven against all sinful, wicked people
who suppress The Truth by their wickedness.
19
They know The Truth about God because He has made it obvious to them.
20
For ever since the world was created, people have seen the earth and
sky. Through everything God made, they can clearly see His invisible
qualities—His eternal power and divine nature. So they have no
excuse for not knowing God.
21
Yes, they knew God, but they wouldn’t worship Him as God or even
give Him thanks. And they began to think up foolish ideas of what God
was like. As a result, their minds became dark and confused.
22
Claiming to be wise, they instead became utter fools.
23
And instead of worshiping The Glorious, Ever-Living God, they
worshiped idols made to look like mere people and birds and animals
and reptiles.
24
So God abandoned them to do whatever shameful things their hearts
desired. As a result, they did vile and degrading things with each
other’s bodies.
25
They traded The Truth about God for a lie. So they worshiped and
served the things God created instead of The Creator Himself, who is
worthy of eternal praise! Amen.
26
That is why God abandoned them to their shameful desires. Even the
women turned against the natural way to have sex and instead indulged
in sex with each other.
27
And the men, instead of having normal sexual relations with women,
burned with lust for each other. Men did shameful things with other
men, and as a result of this sin, they suffered within themselves the
penalty they deserved.
28
Since they thought it foolish to acknowledge God, He abandoned them
to their foolish thinking and let them do things that should never be
done.
29
Their lives became full of every kind of wickedness, sin, greed,
hate, envy, murder, quarreling, deception, malicious behavior, and
gossip.
30
They are backstabbers, haters of God, insolent, proud, and boastful.
They invent new ways of sinning, and they disobey their parents.
31
They refuse to understand, break their promises, are heartless, and
have no mercy.
32
They know God’s justice requires that those who do these things
deserve to die, yet they do them anyway. Worse yet, they encourage
others to do them, too.
I
Corinthians 3:16,17 KJV
16
Know ye not that ye are the temple of God, and that The Spirit Of God
dwelleth in you?
17
If any man defile the temple of God, him shall God destroy; for the
temple of God is holy, which temple ye are.
I
Corinthians 6:13 KJV
Meats
for the belly, and the belly for meats: but God shall destroy both it
and them. Now the body is not for fornication, but for The Lord; and
The Lord for the body.
I
Corinthians 7:9 NLT
But
if they can’t control themselves, they should go ahead and marry.
It’s better to marry than to burn with lust.
I
Corinthians 10:6-12 KJV
6
Now these things were our examples, to the intent we should not lust
after evil things, as they also lusted.
7
Neither be ye idolaters, as were some of them; as it is written, The
people sat down to eat and drink, and rose up to play.
8
Neither let us commit fornication, as some of them committed, and
fell in one day three and twenty thousand.
9
Neither let us tempt Christ, as some of them also tempted, and were
destroyed of serpents.
10
Neither murmur ye, as some of them also murmured, and were destroyed
of the destroyer.
11
Now all these things happened unto them for examples: and they are
written for our admonition, upon whom the ends of the world are come.
12
Wherefore let him that thinketh he standeth take heed lest he fall.
Galatians
5:19-21 NLT
19
When you follow the desires of your sinful nature, the results are
very clear: sexual immorality, impurity, lustful pleasures,
20
idolatry, sorcery, hostility, quarreling, jealousy, outbursts of
anger, selfish ambition, dissension, division, 21 envy, drunkenness,
wild parties, and other sins like these. Let me tell you again, as I
have before, that anyone living that sort of life will not inherit
the Kingdom of God.
Ephesians
4:18,19 NLT
18
Their minds are full of darkness; they wander far from the life God
gives because they have closed their minds and hardened their hearts
against Him.
19
They have no sense of shame. They live for lustful pleasure and
eagerly practice every kind of impurity.
Ephesians
5:3 KJV
But
fornication, and all uncleanness, or covetousness, let it not be once
named among you, as becometh saints;
II
Timothy 3:1-9 NLT
1
You should know this, Timothy, that in the last days there will be
very difficult times.
2
For people will love only themselves and their money. They will be
boastful and proud, scoffing at God, disobedient to their parents,
and ungrateful. They will consider nothing sacred.
3
They will be unloving and unforgiving; they will slander others and
have no self-control. They will be cruel and hate what is good.
4
They will betray their friends, be reckless, be puffed up with pride,
and love pleasure rather than God.
5
They will act religious, but they will reject the power that could
make them Godly. Stay away from people like that!
6
They are the kind who work their way into people’s homes and win
the confidence of vulnerable women who are burdened with the guilt of
sin and controlled by various desires.
7
(Such women are forever following new teachings, but they are never
able to understand The Truth.)
8
These teachers oppose The Truth just as Jannes and Jambres opposed
Moses. They have depraved minds and a counterfeit faith.
9
But they won’t get away with this for long. Someday everyone will
recognize what fools they are, just as with Jannes and Jambres.
I
Peter 2:11 KJV
Dearly
beloved, I beseech you as strangers and pilgrims, abstain from
fleshly lusts, which war against the soul;
I
Peter 4:3 NLT
You
have had enough in the past of the evil things that godless people
enjoy—their immorality and lust, their feasting and drunkenness and
wild parties, and their terrible worship of idols.
II
Peter 2:12-15 KJV
12
But these, as natural brute beasts, made to be taken and destroyed,
speak evil of the things that they understand not; and shall utterly
perish in their own corruption;
13
And shall receive the reward of unrighteousness, as they that count
it pleasure to riot in the day time. Spots they are and blemishes,
sporting themselves with their own deceivings while they feast with
you;
14
Having eyes full of adultery, and that cannot cease from sin;
beguiling unstable souls: an heart they have exercised with covetous
practices; cursed children:
15
Which have forsaken the right way, and are gone astray
Revelation 2:14 NLT (The Message to the Church in
Pergamum)
“But
I have a few complaints against you. You tolerate some among you
whose teaching is like that of Balaam, who showed Balak how to trip
up the people of Israel. He taught them to sin by eating food offered
to idols and by committing sexual sin.
Revelation 9:20,21 NLT (The Sixth Trumpet Brings
the Second Terror)
20
But the people who did not die in these plagues still refused to
repent of their evil deeds and turn to God. They continued to worship
demons and idols made of gold, silver, bronze, stone, and wood—idols
that can neither see nor hear nor walk!
21
And they did not repent of their murders or their witchcraft or their
sexual immorality or their thefts.
Prayer:
Romans
12:2 KJV
And
be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing
of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable,
and perfect, will of God.
